The Speech Assistant

Welcome!
Hello everyone!
I decided to start a blog to share speech therapy materials, games, and crafts with you! A couple of weeks ago I was searching for creative Halloween activities for middle school-aged students in the speech therapy setting with no results. I spent a lot of time developing materials from scratch (in fact, I'm not finished yet) and I wondered if all speech therapists out there had similar problems.
Let me introduce myself. My name is Cara Thompson and I am a speech language pathology assistant (SLPA) at a Seattle-area school district. I love to create and implement hands-on activities and games into speech therapy sessions. I want to create materials that can incorporate many different types of communication goals, and I hope that my ideas will save you time from your all ready busy schedule!
I have received a B.A. in communication sciences and disorders from Western Washington University in 2006 and later received a certificate of proficiency as a speech language pathology assistant. I love working in the school setting, where I am with a different age group with a variety speech and language goals every day.
I understand it is rare for school districts to take on speech therapy assistants, and I hope this changes in the future! SLPAs can implement speech therapy goals written by certified speech language pathologists with little to no supervision. They can also provide screenings instead of the SLPs, freeing a lot of time. This allows the SLPs more relief with their ever-growing caseloads, that seem to increase year after year.
With my assistance, you won't have to worry about coming up with creative holiday-themed activities for your speech therapy groups, no matter what the goals. I'm happy to help!
